Sober Living: common questions

What is sober living?

A sober living home (recovery residence) is shared, substance-free housing where residents support each other’s recovery. Homes usually have house rules, drug and alcohol testing, and expectations like work, school or treatment. It is housing, not treatment.

How do I choose a sober living home?

Visit if you can, and ask about house rules, testing, staff or house managers, cost and what it includes, and whether the home is certified. In Colorado, certified recovery residences are listed by the state’s recognized certifying organization. Step One’s free Choosing the Right Sober Living guide has a full checklist.

Can I stay in sober living while taking medication for addiction?

Many homes accept residents who take prescribed medication for opioid or alcohol use disorder, but not all. Look for “MAT friendly” on listings and ask the home directly.

How much do sober living homes cost in Colorado?

Typical self-pay costs are about $600–$1,500 per month, but prices vary a lot between programs. Many listings on Step One show their price; always confirm the cost, and what it includes, with the provider before you start.

Does insurance cover sober living homes?

Rarely covered by insurance. Coverage depends on your plan and the provider. Use the Insurance filter on this page to see providers that list your plan, then call your insurer and the provider to confirm. Health First Colorado (Colorado Medicaid) members can filter for Medicaid.
